School-Based Food Programs

Young people often face challenges getting enough good food to eat, especially on the weekends when school-based meals are unavailable.

To meet these challenges, the Mission’s Downeast Campus has started food pantries at the Milbridge elementary school and Narraguagus High School. We also operate a backpack program in four additional schools served by the EdGE program. On Fridays, children bring home a backpack stocked with food they can easily prepare themselves.

The Mission reaches many children who live with food insecurity through the EdGE program. Every EdGE after-school session includes a snack. This year, we are piloting a program at the Milbridge elementary school that includes a full, hot dinner. In collaboration with the USDA, we also offer free breakfast and lunch to children during the EdGE summer camps in Cherryfield, Milbridge, and Machias. A child need not be enrolled in the camps to receive the free meals.
