John Zavodny – Reflections on the Small Moments

John Zavodny – Reflections on the Small Moments

NORTHEAST HARBOR, ME — As we work to tell the big picture story of the Mission’s Covid-19 vaccination effort, we also want to make sure to capture the small moments. These are the moments that will bring texture and life to this historic initiative now and as we remember them. Here are some of the moments I will always remember from the first few vaccination trips.

I’ll think of Tammy, Swan’s Island EMT, managing parking in her bright yellow jacket and handing out carnations to all those who came to be vaccinated. A big smile and “thank you” from Tammy for a warm cup of tea on that wonderful windy first clinic day.

I won’t forget a Kubota 4×4 ride on Monhegan. Me in the front with Jess the EMT driving. Peggy, Sharon, and Maureen—our medical team—in the back. Bumps and laughter and racing back to the dock and the Laura B where crew and passengers waited patiently for us to finish every vaccination.

I will remember Barb on Islesford dancing from registration to waiting room to vaccine administration and back to waiting. Then finally gracefully gliding right out the door of the Neighborhood House. Victory sign waving, enormous smile beaming.

I’ll think of Dan and Christina on Matinicus. Dan joking that he cut in front of Christina because his hands were cold. Christina not being surprised when I told on him. Both clearly loving each other and so happy to receive the vaccine and our Mission vaccination stickers.

I will remember Mary and Katelyn, Cranberry Isles twenty-something EMT personnel, greeting every islander. Teasing some, more gentle with others, respectful of all.

And then there is Scott, a young Islesford lobsterman with piercing gray eyes, gently easing his grandmother Polly up with each required move. Scott, reassuring Polly that he has her “pogo stick” when he grabs the cane from where it fell.

Most of all, when I think of these first days I will always remember Douglas Cornman, Sharon Daley, and visiting nurses Maureen Giffin and Peggy Akers huddling and planning. Relentlessly. Joyfully. On Sunbeam. At the clinics. On the road. In the plane. CDC protocols, boat schedules, time, and tides to be managed and re-managed. These are the moments I’ll hang on to as this effort goes forward. These are the moments I will share when folks ask me what it was like. What an honor it is to be a small part of this historic work.

For the Mission,
John

The Mission is providing vaccination clinics on Swan’s Island, Great Cranberry Island, Islesford, Matinicus, Frenchboro, Monhegan, and Isle au Haut. The Mission island vaccine clinics are expected to continue for months, and are held in various community buildings on the islands.

Both Pen Bay Medical Center and MDI Hospital are making this possible.

Thank you Thursday for Lisa Parsons

Thank you Thursday for Lisa Parsons

It’s Thank you Thursday. Today’s shout out of Mission love goes to Lisa Parsons.

Mission Development Associate Anna Silver said, “I’ve known and admired Lisa for a number of years. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the Mission. So kind, cheerful. Lisa lifts the spirits of anyone she comes into contact with.”

“Lisa is very busy at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust where she is Senior Vice President, Regional Market Manager, yet still finds time to volunteer with the Mission and so many other organizations and communities on Mount Desert Island. The entire MDI community is lucky to have someone so generous and thoughtful. It is always a great privilege to work with Lisa,” said Anna.

Chris Stelling, the Mission’s Director of Development, adds that it never surprises her that when she attends a community-oriented event on MDI, she sees Lisa there – organizing, checking people in, and mainly exuding warmth and welcome.

This is what community looks like.

Maine Seacoast Mission Establishes Covid-19 Vaccination Clinics on Maine Islands

NORTHEAST HARBOR, ME – Continuing its century long tradition of bridging the health care gap among the island communities it serves, Maine Seacoast Mission is providing island Covid-19 vaccination clinics starting the week of February 22. Medical and support staff, led by Mission Island Health Services Director Sharon Daley, will travel primarily aboard the Mission’s 74-foot boat, Sunbeam.

“Everything I’m doing seems to be Covid related, and it’s been a real rollercoaster ride for the last week,” said Sharon Daley. “Thanks to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and MDI Hospital, I have an initial 150 vaccines to take out.

“Island Outreach Director Douglas Cornman has been working seven days and nights a week registering people,” Sharon continued. “We have to have an accurate count for each island. And we have to figure out rotation of the islands so we’re not ending up short of vaccines or with vaccines left over.

“I have a couple of great nurses who are going with me. I can’t wait to go on the boat and start doing this,” she said.

The Mount Desert Island based Mission is working in partnership with island residents, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, county officials, Mount Desert Island Hospital, and Pen Bay Medical Center.

The Mission is planning to support vaccination clinics on these islands: Swans, Great Cranberry, Islesford, Matinicus, Frenchboro, Monhegan, and Isle au Haut. Daley, Cornman, and Sunbeam Captain Michael Johnson are scheduling vaccination trips, remembering that the Moderna vaccine requires a second dose approximately 28 days after the first.

The Mission island vaccine clinics are expected to continue for months, and held in various community buildings on the islands.

The Mission boat and crew are well-prepared for this assignment. The first Sunbeam trip after the boat’s recent refit was to conduct flu clinics under Covid restrictions. The Sunbeam is equipped with health facilities including a medical grade refrigerator.

“We have been anticipating this opportunity to serve since the first vaccine was announced last fall. In many ways, the Mission has been preparing for this moment for over a century,” said Mission President John Zavodny.”

Since 1905, the Maine Seacoast Mission has supported communities in some of Maine’s most isolated villages and islands. The Mission connects people to each other, to education, to food, and to wellness.
