The Union Church of Vinalhaven offers a very active range of services and programs. It also provides compassion and caring to islanders undergoing very difficult times. One example of this involves the story of a woman who was going through a Job-like experience. The woman's cancer returned, her husband died unexpectedly, her adult son was returning home from the hospital to receive hospice care, and then her modest home had a devastating fire. Her faith was tested, but the community responded with caring and generosity. A home was offered for mother and son, meals were provided, lumber was donated for the rebuilding of the house, flooring and paint were donated, and 18 professional carpenters donated their time to help rebuild the house. The Mission also stepped up and made a contribution for costs incurred in the renovation of the house. Hope has emerged from the ashes of this house due to the goodness that lives within the human spirit.
