Before attending seminary, Dave had lived on
North Haven for five years and worked in an island
boatyard. He never imagined he'd be back on the
island as pastor, but in 1991, after ten years
on the mainland, he answered the call to serve
with the Maine Sea Coast Mission.
Like most small, one-church towns, everyone on
the island—whether they are members or not—thinks
of this as his or her church. Believing in the
importance of meeting people where they are, Dave
has been involved at many levels in the community,
among them volunteering on the ambulance, performing
in local theater productions, leading a Christmas
oratorio, co-hosting a weekly coffee hour and
a monthly luncheon for senior citizens, serving
on the boards of local non-profits and on town
boards, moderating town meeting, and chaperoning
the middle school trip to Washington, DC. The
church and another organization on the island
have partnered to provide support for family caregivers
and year-round residents in need of care at all
levels. A long-standing relationship with an island-based
foundation brings help to residents young and
old who are struggling with medical expenses.
Generous donations from island and summer residents
allow the deacon's discretionary fund to provide
assistance with rent, electric bills, ferry tickets
and other related expenses for medical appointments. |
