Mill
Pond Health Center
Swan's Island
With help from the Maine Sea Coast Mission, the
town of Swan's Island was able to furnish and
equip a 20-year-old building that was renovated
in 2007 for use as a health center. The Maine
Sea Coast Mission provided funding with matching
contributions for state-of-the-art equipment.
The building, the former Old Salt Restaurant,
was completely gutted during the renovation, and
now houses a functional, well-equipped, health
center. The Mill Pond Health Center has two exam
rooms, a physician's office, lab room, reception
area and large waiting area, which doubles as
educational space. Primary care and specialty
providers from the mainland offer services at
the health center several days a month. Phlebotomy
(blood draws) services are available once a week.
Educational and preventive care programs are offered
to island residents in the large waiting room
area of the facility. The island's AA group holds
its twice-weekly meetings at the health center.
The community has embraced the new health center,
which makes life on the island easier by providing
much needed health care right on the island. The
Maine Sea Coast Mission is facilitating high definition
telemedicine equipment for Swan's Island. Telemedicine
services, which have been available aboard the
Sunbeam, will now be available in the
island health center. This cutting edge technology
will allow island residents to see providers ranging
from primary care to behavioral counseling via
the telemed equipment.
The Mill Pond Health Center is a comfortable
and attractive facility, which has enabled better
access to health care and health care related
services for all of Swan's Island residents, both
year-round and seasonal.
