For over one hundred years the Maine Sea Coast Mission’s Christmas Program has provided holiday presents to those isolated on the remote outer islands. Recently, we have extended our efforts to reach families residing in Downeast, Maine. New items are donated by hundreds of volunteers throughout the year and are distributed to over 3,200 children, families, nursing home residents, and prisoners at Christmas time. In 2014, the Mission opened the Elves’ Workshop in Cherryfield where parents can come and shop for the gifts most suited to their loved ones. For children, this may be toys, school supplies, books, or warm clothes; for adults, it may be a jacket or work gloves, books, calendars, or personal care items. In the true spirit of Christmas, Elves, community volunteers, often make suggestions as to who might be cheered by a specific holiday gift.
The Christmas Program could not operate without the careful organization of Marilyn Nickson and the countless hours of sorting, wrapping, and distributing by many wonderful volunteers.
